Viewing the Page Image - using Print View

You can view the scanned image by:

Print View

Once in Print View you can navigate by means of the Acrobat toolbar. If you are looking at a single page you can return using Back to Screen View. If you are looking at multiple pages you can look at the first page using Back to Single Page View. You can also go straight back to the Full Citation.

Some of the functions of Adobe Acrobat, such as text selection, and finding occurrences of phrases and keywords will not work, as the application is unable to read the textual content of the scanned image.

Download whole article

By clicking on the Download Whole Article icon you are asked to define which pages you want to import; you can import a range or the whole article.

On the Download Whole Article page the total number of pages appears in the white box by default. You can select a range from the article's pages by entering the start and finish of the section as numbers separated by a hyphen. You can also mix individual pages with page ranges, for example, 1,3,5-12. Once you have defined the section of pages to view, click on the green/brown 'download pages' logo to select them.

Caution

If you have requested many pages then the process may take some time. Remember that your computer will be fully occupied once it begins to download the pages. An alert box will caution you when you click the download icon. If you need to reduce the number of pages, choose Cancel and alter the range.

If you are looking at a page in Print View when you select Download Whole Article, the whole article will replace whichever individual page is in your Acrobat Reader screen with the first page of the whole article. If you are using Screen View when you select Download Whole Article then Acrobat Reader will open and do the same.

By clicking on Back to single page view you are returned to a single page view of the first page of the article.

Troubleshooting

Problem: you are unable to see, or to save, a high-resolution image.

By clicking on the Print View icon in Screen View, whatever version of Adobe Acrobat should have been launched on your computer. Ideally, this application should function as a 'plugin'. This means that instead of launching a separate application, Adobe Acrobat will effectively 'take over' the bottom frame of your web browser window. It should display its own toolbar allowing you more functionality such as printing, saving, zooming in and out, as well as moving around the document by the use of the 'hand' tool. You also have the option of rotating the document.

Problem: Adobe Acrobat has not been installed on your computer.

If you are working from a Windows 95/98 or Windows NT platform click here if you wish to go to Adobe's web site to download this application now. If you are working from a Macintosh, Unix, or Windows 3.1 platform click here. It is a straightforward download process, but the time it takes to download will depend on what sort of Internet connection you have (i.e. land-line or modem and your bandwidth). Once you have clicked the download button, you will see a dialogue box containing two radio button options asking if you wish to run the application from its current location or save it to disk. You should select the latter option to save the application onto your hard disk. Once the download is complete you will then need to run the set-up executable file to 'unpack' the application.

If you experience any problems either with the download or functionality of Adobe Acrobat, you can visit the customer support section of their site for advice in troubleshooting and answers to any queries you may have.

To discover the functionality that each icon performs, hold your mouse over it and an explanatory tool-tip will appear.
